Maria Caya understands the stresses of taking a class of fourth graders on a field trip. Even when that field trip is merely an end of the year, final day of school trip to the local bowling alley.
That’s why, presumably to help cope with the stress, she had a drink before the trip. Then another. And another.
By noon, Caya was passed out and at the hospital, having been picked up by her husband.
The Janesville School District is opening an investigation, which if it is found that she violated the district’s drug and alcohol policy, could lead to punishment ranging from suspension to termination.
She was NOT, however, arrested for the incident, as the police noted she did not cause a disturbance that would warrant disorderly conduct charges. And seven other district employees chaperoning the trip didn’t notice anything wrong, until Caya passed out.
